How do I clean my steel?

Our cleaning process is very similar to most cast iron pans. After each use, your Baking Steel will darken slightly as it develops a patina. Believe it or not this is a good thing. It will protect your Baking Steel for decades to come!

Remove tough, stuck on matter from the surface of your Baking Steel with a normal kitchen scraper

Hand wash with light soap and water

Dry both sides thoroughly

Please note:  Minor imperfections, surface markings and slight color variations are normal result of our hand seasoning process and will not effect the performance of your Baking Steel.  As the Baking Steel patinas, these surface blemishes, imperfections will become unnoticeable.

Returns: Customer satisfaction is essential to our business. We are confident you will be happy with your Baking Steel® purchase. For any item that is found defective, you have a 30-day period to submit a replacement request. This applies to any item that is found to be defective in material or workmanship when put to normal household use and cared for according to care instructions. We will do anything (well, almost) to ensure you are thrilled with your product. If you're not happy, neither are we! Please use the Return Portal to begin a return. After approval, you will receive a return shipping label via email to ship the product back.

Exchanges: At the moment, we do not offer the option for exchanges.

Return costs: There are no return costs for orders that fall under our standard return, refund and exchange policy.

Handling fee: We currently do not charge a handling fee

Refunds: You have 30-days from when the order was shipped to receive a full refund on eligible merchandise. Merchandise must be unused, in the condition it was received and in the original packaging. Custom size Baking Steels are not eligible for returns/refunds. If your return falls within 30 days from when the order was shipped, we will provide you with a prepaid label for return shipping. You’ll be automatically refunded on your original payment method within 2-5 business days. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too.

Our Inspiration

A match made in heaven.

A unique combination of interests and skills led to the birth of the Baking Steel. And, in my humble opinion, pizza is the better for it.

Having studied Culinary Arts, I’m pretty passionate about food – pizza in particular. In fact, my thoughts are never far from creating the perfect crust.

As fate would have it, one day, I was reading pieces of Modernist Cuisine by Nathan Myhrvold. In his book, Nathan stated that the best tool to use for making the perfect crust would be a piece of steel. And that, my friends, was my “AHA” moment! You see, I grew up with and worked for a family-owned, steel manufacturing business, Stoughton Steel.

As soon as I could, I hustled out to our plant, found a piece of quarter-inch, high-quality steel and brought it home for some testing. According to Modernist Cuisine, steel is a more conductive cooking surface than a brick oven’s stone. Because of that conductivity, it cooks faster and more evenly at a lower temperature, resulting in a beautiful, thin, crispy crust. Real-life tests with my steel confirmed that theory completely for me!

I had spent plenty of time over the years with countless pans, pizza stones, gadgets and gear trying to perfect my pizzas in a home oven. But I was always disappointed. Who knew the solution had been waiting for me all along in a pile of steel over at the shop. Talk about serendipity!

I’m lucky to be living out this dream of combining two great interests of my life into one amazing product! Now, like pizza lovers everywhere, you can “create the crust you crave.”
